5 – 17 November 2019 OPENING Tuesday 5 November at 6 pm GALLERY HOURS : Tuesday – Friday from 3 – 7 pm, Saturday & Sunday from 2 – 7 pm Lieux-dits [Said Places] | Elise Prudhomme Photographic author, Elise Prudhomme, uses her many cameras to explore the possibilities and limits of the medium. Her subject matter varies from Landscape, Portraits or Interior Spaces but throughout there is a humor, irony and an appreciation of the surreal. Her latest exhibition is Lieux-dits. This is a French toponymic term that literally translates as “Said Places”. It refers to small geographical locations that bear traditional names often based on some characteristic of the place, its former use, or a past event. These photographs represent events as well as places, as in a memoir. One single shot was not enough to express the feeling engendered by the locale. Through a creative use of multiple perspectives and points of view to generate diverse reference points, the emotions associated with these toponyms are anchored in memory. Read More

Lieux-dits | New series exhibited at Studio Galerie B&B Photographic author, I use a variety of analog and digital cameras to explore the possibilities and limits of the medium. While my choice of subject matter varies from Landscape, Portraits or Interior Spaces throughout there is a humor, irony and an appreciation of the surreal. My latest series is titled “Lieux-dits”. Through a creative use of multiple exposures to generate diverse reference points, the emotions associated with the “Lieux-dits” are anchored in memory. Taken during travels, when my sensitivity to my surrounds was most acute, they relate tales of encounters, lights and foreign languages during an adventurous time in my life. Exhibition Opening of Exposed [À découvert] Using a medium format film camera, I conceived, shot (using myself as a model) and hand-developed these photographs during travels in the United States, Italy and Switzerland from 1988 – 1991. The silver-gelatin prints were made by myself in a traditional analog darkroom in 2014 – 2015. You can see this series during the Mois de la Photo OFF (Photography Month OFF) from 28 March to 23 April at Studio Galerie B&B in Paris, France. Here are a few images of the exhibition and opening.
Exposed [À découvert] exhibited during Mois de la Photo OFF from 28 March – 23 April 2017 In the midst of a garden, of the forest, perched on a tree branch or lodged in the shade of foliage, the naked body, divinely animal, inscribes itself in the order of nature. But is there a place for it in the order of the real? The artist does not seem quite freed from this nostalgia of fusion with the maternal realm. For a moment, hidden at the top of a tree-refuge, she becomes a bird. The photographer’s eye forges unceasing images of a paradise where recovering the voluptuousness of flight proper to creation is the greatest desire. – translated from the text by Patricia Bourcillier Exposed is the first part of a body of work that I began in the 80s on the exploration of self and the photographic medium. It is followed, in the 90s, by a more intimate series called Self-consciousness. Read More
Exhibition Opening of Wild Wild West | Studio Galerie B&B It was another memorable full-house at Studio Galerie B&B for the exhibition opening of “A Little Further West” (Un peu plus à l’ouest) featuring black and white photographs by Philippe Bachelier “Ouessantine Promenades” and new color work by Elise Prudhomme from her series Wild Wild West. Wild Wild West | Exhibition at Studio Galerie B&B in Paris from 13 – 23 December 2016 Honoring the centennial of America’s National Park Service, Elise Prudhomme presents “Wild Wild West” a contemporary study of Western American landscapes faced with man’s appropriation of them. While contemplating the landscape definitely involves an aesthetic act, appropriating the landscape implies an act of transformation. Transformed into places of recreation, habitation or consumption, the evolution of these landscapes reveals a new picturesque.

Sands of Time In recent photographic studies, I have been exploring the theme of the sentiment of nature. Raised in a family of architects and passionate gardeners, I am interested in an art of nature capable of encompassing both garden and landscape. This new series of large format pinhole photographs, Sands of Time, excerpt from an ongoing project on the development of the cultural landscape and the emergence of a new picturesque in the Cotentin, includes work done on historic Tatihou Island*, where layers of symbolic material trace the constant evolution of man in his environment. * Tatihou Island, owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, is managed by the Conseil Général de la Manche. Read More
Entre Côtes | Photography Exhibition at Studio Galerie B&B From December 9, a sea wind will blow on Studio Gallery B&B at the occasion of the exhibition of two photographers, Entre Côtes. Elise Prudhomme presents a new series of large format pinhole photographs entitled Sands of Time, extract of an ongoing project on the evolution of the cultural landscape and the emergence of a new picturesque in the Cotentin. From the Atlantic coast to the inland, Philippe Bachelier walked his cameras through the Basque country on both sides of the Pyrénées. His black and white landscapes, printed silver-gelatin paper, recount the changing lights of the ocean and the perennial energy of nature. My conquest of space To close the 2013 season primarily dedicated to my photographic work Yours, mine, Le Nôtre’s, I propose a medley of my hobbies and my world, bonified by time like a Christmas Pudding. If a theme were necessary, it would be around landscapes whether rural or urban, and our modest or massive footprint on this earth. This is also an opportunity for me to revisit places that have built my relationship to the world (the United States, Italy and France) and evoke ongoing projects: You’ve Got Mail, The Glorious 30’s. Finally, I present a selection of findings from daily work that fill me with joy as a photographer. Read More

Yours, Mine, Le Nôtre’s: An American Photographer Examines the Garden of Versailles As France celebrates the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre, the father of French gardens, France Revisited explores some of this 17th-century landscape gardener’s most famous gardens and parks. Here, in text and images, American photographer Elise Prudhomme, a longtime Paris resident whose work has been exhibited in the Tuileries Garden and will soon appear in an exhibition in Versailles, guides us along the garden paths of Versailles. by Gary Lee Kraut * * * Photographs and text by Elise Prudhomme André Le Nôtre designed the Garden of Versailles to display, reflect and serve as the backdrop for the pomp and glory and power of the reign of Louis XIV. As such the garden functioned as a direct extension of the palace itself. Piqued by Nicolas Fouquet’s audacious success with the Château of Vaux-le-Vicomte which he visited in 1661, Louis XIV enlisted the three men who had contributed to that success—the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun and the landscape gardener André Le Nôtre—to create the palace of all palaces: Versailles. read full article…
Celebrating Le Nôtre: An American Photographer Explores the Tuileries Garden France Revisited joins France’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre, the father of French gardens, with seven stunning photos of Paris’s most historical garden, the Tuileries Garden, by American photographer Elise Prudhomme. Yours, Mine, Le Nôtre’s Photographs and text by Elise Prudhomme A walk through the Tuileries Garden is a return to the origin of French gardens. Considering its long heritage of transformations by queens, kings, landscape architects and gardeners, the Tuileries cannot be fully attributed to André Le Nôtre (1613-1700). It can nevertheless be viewed as the matrix of André Le Nôtre’s career. By matrix I mean that the Tuileries was his testing grounds and the precursor of his future projects, the womb or mold from which his future work originated and developed. Without the Tuileries there would be no Versailles. read full article…
