Traditionally painted mud wall and doorway of a home in the fort of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India
Color photograph of a traditionally painted mud wall and doorway of a home in the fort of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, Western India, 2009. The orange swastika is an important Jain symbol. The four arms of the swastika symbolize four states of existence according to Jainism: Heavenly beings (devas), Human beings, Hellish being and Tiryancha (subhuman like flora or fauna). The swastika symbolizes the perpetual nature of the universe in the material world, where creatures are destined to one of those states based on their karma.
